Wang Ziping: Sparkled Ripple and Flint

Sep 12 - Oct 31, 2026

Ginkgo Space (Shanghai) is pleased to present “Sparkled Ripple and Flint”, a solo exhibition by Wang Ziping, opening on 12 September 2026. Marking Wang’s first solo show at Ginkgo Space, the exhibition features new oil on canvas and watercolor on paper works created over the past two years.

Wang Ziping likens the striking of flint to the way she works a small brush across a painting, pass after pass. Each blow and friction throws off a few tiny sparks; fleeting as they appear, repetition gathers them into an energy not to be underestimated. Her practice reflects not a single burst, but years of searching inward toward her own origins. A ripple, by contrast, carries an effortless power: wave following wave, extending endlessly outward, impossible to contain. Wang does not chase grand narratives; she attends instead to personal experience and visual sensation as they arise—supple, sustained, unstoppable. Condensation and diffusion, expansion outward and pressure inward: both forces run through her oil and watercolour series.

In her recent oil works, she handles imagery more finely and more divergently, embedding images into layers with subtle depth. This is a new attempt slightly different from the flatter treatment of her previous works: the exquisite detail of classical outlining, the modularity of the pixel, the flatness of pop comics and the smudge of Photoshop all emerge here, alongside richer juxtapositions and deformations of images. Gaps open up between the images, and viewers must enter these gaps, moving close to explore and to make out the details of each layer, in order to to fully experience the work. Individual, image and environment are interwoven; observing and being observed are reversible in both directions. The artist does not want viewers to fix on any single element, but to complete the final creation through an open gaze and free imagination.

Watercolour works read like a collection of prose essays drawn from daily life. Rather than re-presenting the grand narrative of natural scenery, they record micro-perceptions passing among light, breath and skin. A leaf landing lightly on the skin, sunlight warming the cheek: these are body’s faint responses to the world. In her practice, Wang lends her body to these fleeting natural fragments, rendering invisible touches, temperatures, and humidity into visible ripples across the paper. Watercolor bloom in the picture, and color blocks seep across boundaries, like ripples extending outward ring after ring, not attempting to trap anything. What she arrives at in this outward diffusion is an inward, intimate sense of belonging.

Wang Ziping was born in 1995 in Shenyang, China. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from the Pratt Institute in New York. Drawing on the visual languages of advertising and illustration, Wang’s paintings stem from the complex experience of living within the “attention economy” of the digital age. Her richly colored visual compositions bring together a diverse range of images and stylistic references. Wang’s paintings construct the illusion of a narrative, with painting functioning here as a form of bait; the underlying significance of the compositions remains inaccessible to the viewer, much like the “black box” of an algorithmic machine.
